Description

The Network Technician II will be responsible for providing the necessary administrative and technical support for the Switching Department to ensure the proper functioning of equipment and software under his/her span of control.

Knowledge and Experience:

· Two (2) years working experience in a Switching environment.

· Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

· Demonstrated ability to build productive working relationships with internal teams, external customers and partners.

· The ability to drive/operate a motor vehicle.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

· Exceptional math skills: ability to calculate interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages; balance accounts; add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; locate routine mathematical errors; compute rate, ratio and percent, including the drafting and interpretation of bar graphs.

· Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct others, train personnel, write reports, correspondence and procedures, speak clearly to customers and employees.

· Ability to deal with advanced problems involving multiple facets and variables in standardized or specialty situations.

Human Relations/ Contacts

Internal

The incumbent interacts frequently with functional department heads, line management of the business offices/units, subsidiaries, and various Executive Offices regarding profit plan projections and variances, operations and expenses, systems, and procedures, complement and organizational structures, capital expenditures, premises, etc.

External

Interactions also occur with financial institutions and service providers on matters relating to the Company’s operations and strategic initiatives. The incumbent may also interact with the shareholder’s auditors, regulators, and the Company’s legal, tax and accounting advisors from time to time.

 

Environment and Physical Activities

The incumbent is in a non-confined office type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will.

The incumbent, in the course of performing in this position spends time writing, typing, speaking, listening, seeing (such as close, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and adjusted focus), sitting, walking, standing, squatting, kneeling and reaching.

The incumbent, while performing his/her duties may be required to climb ladders at heights not exceeding 6ft, shall be required to lift objects not exceeding 10lbs in the execution of his/her duties.

The incumbent for this position may operate any or all of the following: telephone, cellular telephone, beeper, copy and fax machines, adding machine (calculator), check protector, microfilm equipment, encoder, money counter, credit card terminal, computer terminal, personal computer, and related printers.

The incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle in the conduct of his/her duties. The incumbent is required to have a current motor vehicle license and be company certified to operate GTT owned motor vehicles.

The incumbent shall be required to work outside of normal working hours on occasions and shall be compensated at fair and applicable rates as defined in his/her compensation package or collective bargaining agreement as applicable.

The incumbent shall operate within a geographical boundary as stipulated in his terms of employment. Responsibilities

· Performs the direct administrative functions necessary for achieving departmental goals.

· Develops and administers the work-plan for direct reports to aid in the completion of departmental assignments.

· Develops and implements training and staff development programs for the benefit of direct reports under his/her supervisory authority.

· Ensures – timely completion of service orders to meet departmental SLAs.

· Provides field (smart hands) support to other units such as Power, DNS (Data Network Services), Transmission and OSP.

· Uses commonly available tools to ensure documentation practices are adhered to by direct reports in support of ISO and quality requirements.

· Provides performance and productivity reports to senior officers to aid in tracking and monitoring department performance.

· Uses available system tools to direct and control the team under his supervision, in order to provide optimal support to OSP and other requesting teams.

· Maintains and implements good record keeping practices in relation to subscriber line facilities.

· Manages interdepartmental communication to ensure accurate and timely feedback is provided to other offices, on issues related to the department under his/her span of control.

· Monitors alarms and operational data from equipment and software under his/her span of control. Engineers use this information to take corrective action or develop appropriate work plans.

· Uses common database entry skills to update GTT’s customer record keeping systems thus ensuring the accuracy of these records.

· Liaise with GTT Facilities Management, Business Service Unit, Occupation Health and Safety & Security on matters related to equipment under his/her span of control.

· Ensures direct reports adhere to health and safety guidelines and stipulations and initiates corrective action when environmental defects are observed or reported.

Detailed Duty List:

Power routines: Perform basic checks on generators such as oil level checks, fuel level checks, record genset run hours, inspect belt tension, perform failover testing from commercial power to generator, inspect batteries, inspection for oil and fuel leaks. The Network Technician shall report observations via standard operational procedures to the departments concerned required to take corrective action.

Environmental checks: Perform checks on cooling, physical environment at GTT exchanges/buildings (security of windows, doors, fencing, locks and gates); ceiling intrusion by bats, rodents and other animals; physical state of building including but not limited to fire hazards such as discarded boxes, wires, cable reels, discarded equipment. The Network Technician shall report observations via standard operational procedures to the concerned departments required to take corrective action.

Smart hands support: The Network Technician shall perform smart hands support as directed by relevant subject matter experts for remote assistance on products and equipment pertaining to the transmission, fibre, data and power networks.

Emergency response: The Network Technician shall be responsible for responding to and coordinating support for any emergencies occurring within the district that he controls and related to products/equipment under his control.

Frame duties: The Network Technician shall perform jumpering tasks related to new services, DSL, line repairs, ILCM consolidation, frame cleanup. The Network technician shall provide such frame support to OSP technicians as required.

Meter readings: The Network Technician shall perform readings on GWI and GPL meters at exchange locations within his span of control. These readings shall be passed to concerned departments per standard operating procedures.

Other duties: The Network Technician shall perform other duties related to the safety and good management of his/her district as directed by his/her supervising officer. Such duties shall be reasonable and within the scope of his/her mental and physical abilities and confirm acceptable safety practices.

The position of Network Technician II performs duties specific to the position and other functions as assigned by supervising officers.
