To provide occupational safety and health advice to all aspects of GWI operations and to ensure safety compliance
A Bachelors of Arts or Science in Safety Management or Environmental Health plus five years’ experience in Safety and Health management
OR
A Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health plus eight years’ experience in safety and health management.
NEBOSH certification will be an asset
To assist the Executive Director, Human Resources Management and Development with the formulation and implementation of policies, procedures, and programmes to satisfy operational requirements for safety and health and to update such policies and procedures over time.
To develop, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Human Resources Management and Development sectional work plans for occupational safety and to ensure plan implementation and monitoring.
To advise Corporate Management on new developments to improve safety and health throughout Guyana Water Inc.
To coordinate the establishment and the work of Safety and Health Committees in keeping with statutory provisions.
To develop, in collaboration with other Managers, safety and health standards to ensure safe practices and the preservation of health.
Prepare and conduct safety training for employees.
To ensure that sanitary and other facilities are provided and maintained to promote the health and welfare of employees.
To develop safety consciousness and regard for sanitary conditions through education and training of staff throughout the organization.
To investigate industrial accidents or reports of hazardous conditions and advise on corrective action to be taken.
To make regular inspection visits to work locations, assess unsafe conditions and practices, and make recommendations for safe practices and procedures.
To coordinate the procurement and issue of safety devices/equipment and protective clothing to employees.
To organize first aid training and certification to cater for emergency situations.
To establish and maintain accident records which can be analyzed to determine frequency, severity rates and loss ratios.
To establish disaster preparedness procedures to deal with disasters such as fires, bomb threats, and flooding, chemical spills etc. and ensure their coordination and execution.
To perform other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the level and purpose of the post.
The Georgetown Sewerage and Water Commission was established on the 23rd March 1929 to provide for the completion of the Sewerage Works of Georgetown. Its objectives were to establish a body of Commissioners to control maintain and manage the Sewerage System and Waterworks of Georgetown; and to provide for the maintenance thereof. GS&WC was responsible for Central Georgetown. The Georgetown Sewerage and Water Amendment Act Number 4 of 1994 made the GS&WC an autonomous public sector institution under the control of the Minister of Works and Communications.
The Guyana Water Authority (GUYWA) was established under the Guyana Water Authority Act Chapter 55:01 of 1972. Its main activities included the construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems in order to supply potable water to the public. Prior to the establishment of the Authority, responsibility for the water sector was that of the Pure Water Supply Division of the Ministry of Works.
The Guyana Water Authority was responsible for delivering water to the suburban, Rural and the Hinterland regions excluding Linden and those areas supplied by the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee.
The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) was established, resulting from the merger of the Guyana Water Authority (Guywa) and the Georgetown Sewerage and Water Commissioners (GS&WC), on May 30, 2002. Thus, GWI is responsible for the previously divided responsibilities of GUYWA and GS&WC.
