A Cashier is responsible for accurately processing customer purchases at the checkout counter, including scanning items, applying prices and discounts, and handling cash, card, and other electronic payments. The role requires maintaining a balanced cash drawer, issuing receipts, and ensuring a smooth and courteous checkout experience. Cashiers also address basic customer queries, ensure the checkout area is clean and organised, and follow company procedures for refunds, price checks, and security. This position demands strong numerical skills, attention to detail, honesty, and the ability to work shift hours in a busy retail environment.
At least 5 CSEC subjects, including Mathematics and English Language.
1 year of experience as a cashier, teller, or in a similar cash-handling role (retail or supermarket experience is a strong asset).
Proven ability to handle cash accurately and maintain a balanced float.
Greet customers at the checkout and process purchases efficiently and accurately.
Scan items, verify prices, apply discounts or promotions, and ensure correct quantities.
Receive cash, debit/credit card, and other approved payments; issue receipts and correct change.
Balance the cash drawer at the end of each shift and reconcile against system totals.
Maintain cleanliness and organisation at the checkout area, including bagging counters and surrounding shelves.
Follow company procedures for voids, refunds, price overrides, and returns; obtain necessary approvals.
Monitor for counterfeit notes, suspicious transactions, and potential theft and report immediately to the Supervisor/Security.
Protect customer information and maintain strict confidentiality regarding transactions.
Adhere to all cash-handling, loss-prevention, and security policies.
