JOB SUMMARY
The General Manager is responsible for the overall performance, profitability, and operational effectiveness of Gizmos and Gadgets Group of Companies. The role provides strategic and operational leadership across the company's retail stores, warehouse, and supporting functions.
The General Manager is accountable for achieving business targets, maintaining operational standards, controlling costs, developing the management team, improving customer experience, and ensuring company policies and procedures are consistently implemented.
The position requires a results-driven leader with strong commercial judgment, operational discipline, and the ability to translate business objectives into measurable actions and results.
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Retail Management, Operations Management, or a related field preferred
• Minimum 5 years of progressive management experience, preferably in retail, distribution, FMCG, or a multi-location business environment
• Proven experience managing teams, managers, and/or multiple business locations
• Strong knowledge of retail operations, sales, inventory management, budgeting, and business performance
• Experience working with KPIs, financial reports, and operational data
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
• Strong business judgment and decision-making ability
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
• Experience with POS, ERP, inventory management, payroll, or retail management systems is an advantage
• Knowledge of the Guyana retail market and applicable workplace requirements is an advantage
1. Business & Retail Operations
• Oversee the overall day-to-day operations of the company's retail stores, warehouse, and supporting functions
• Establish clear operational standards and ensure consistent implementation across all locations
• Monitor store and departmental performance and take timely corrective action when targets or standards are not met
• Conduct regular operational reviews and store visits to identify issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement
• Ensure effective staffing, scheduling, store readiness, merchandising, cleanliness, security, and customer service standards
• Standardize and implement best practices across locations to improve operational efficiency
2. Sales & Business Performance
• Lead the execution of strategies to achieve sales, revenue, and profitability targets
• Monitor performance by store, department, product category, and sales team
• Work with Sales and Marketing to maximize promotional campaigns, seasonal opportunities, product launches, and revenue growth
• Review business performance data and implement actions to address underperformance
• Identify opportunities for business growth, improved market competitiveness, and increased customer retention
3. Financial & Cost Management
• Work closely with Finance to monitor revenue, expenses, budgets, margins, and overall profitability
• Ensure stores and departments operate within approved budgets
• Monitor controllable operating costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and improved resource utilization
• Ensure appropriate financial and operational controls are maintained to minimize fraud, waste, losses, and unnecessary expenses
• Use financial and operational data to support sound business decisions
4. Inventory & Supply Chain Management
• Oversee inventory management across stores and the warehouse
• Ensure appropriate stock levels, replenishment, transfers, receiving, storage, and stock movement procedures are maintained
• Monitor inventory accuracy, stock variances, shrinkage, damaged goods, and obsolete inventory
• Ensure regular stock counts and inventory audits are conducted and discrepancies are properly investigated
• Work with Inventory, Warehouse, Procurement, and Store teams to improve stock availability and minimize inventory losses
5. Leadership & People Management
• Provide direction, coaching, and accountability to Store Managers, Department Heads, and other members of the management team
• Establish clear performance expectations and ensure managers are accountable for achieving their targets
• Develop managers' leadership and people-management capabilities through coaching, feedback, and performance reviews
• Partner with HR on recruitment, workforce planning, employee development, performance management, employee relations, and retention
• Identify high-potential employees and support succession planning and internal career development
• Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement
6. Customer Experience
• Establish and maintain consistent customer service standards across all locations
• Monitor customer feedback, complaints, returns, and service issues
• Ensure customer concerns are resolved promptly and appropriately
• Identify recurring service issues and implement corrective actions
• Promote a customer-focused culture throughout the organization
7. Compliance, Risk & Internal Controls
• Ensure employees and managers comply with company policies, procedures, and operational standards
• Work with HR and relevant departments to support compliance with applicable Guyana employment and workplace requirements
• Ensure appropriate health, safety, security, and loss-prevention practices are maintained
• Identify significant operational and business risks and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are implemented
• Ensure major incidents, losses, policy violations, and operational concerns are properly documented and escalated
8. Process Improvement & Change Management
• Evaluate existing processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity, and service delivery
• Lead the implementation of new systems, procedures, technologies, and operational initiatives
• Ensure organizational changes are clearly communicated and effectively implemented
• Monitor compliance with newly implemented processes and address gaps in execution
• Encourage managers to identify and implement practical improvements within their areas of responsibility
9. Strategic Planning & Management Reporting
• Participate in the development of the company's business strategy, annual goals, and operational plans
• Translate company objectives into measurable targets for stores and departments
• Review key business and operational reports and provide management with timely recommendations
• Report significant performance issues, risks, and opportunities to the Managing Director / CEO
• Monitor progress against strategic initiatives and ensure agreed actions are completed
• Stay informed about retail trends, competitor activity, customer behavior, and developments in the Guyana market
• Other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned from time-to-time
