Working Associates: Lecturers / Tutors / Professors / Laboratory Assistant

 

Reports to:                 The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Senior Administrative Manager

 

Overview: The Laboratory Coordinator works in supporting the work of lecturers and their students to ensure that they:

A)   make the best use of the time they spend in the laboratory;

B)   use equipment safely;

C)   accurately record the results of their work.

Requirements

  • Atleast 2 years' work experience as a Lab Technician/ Lab Assistant

  • A background in chemistry

Responsibilities

The duties of the Laboratory Coordinator include but are not limited to:

 a.       Liaise with teaching staff on their needs for practical work and maintain an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment, setting a priority system where necessary.

b.      Assist teaching staff with demonstrations.

c.       Assist teaching staff in instructing students on use/care of equipment during experiments.

d.      Advise and assist teaching staff in safety matters relating to the laboratory.

e.       Demonstrate laboratory techniques to teaching staff/students.

f.        Assist with the use of computers and learning technologies within the department.

g.       Prepare solutions, stains and media for use in the laboratory.

h.      Maintain a safe chemical storage/handling/disposal system in accordance with current regulations.

i.        Assist with security of laboratory and equipment.

j.        Maintain an inventory of equipment.

k.      Assist with labelling, storage, stocktaking and ordering of equipment and chemicals.

l.        Service and clean simple laboratory apparatus/equipment.

m.    Develop maintenance procedures for laboratory equipment.

n.      Attend appropriate professional development.

o.       Liaise with organizations and industries for purpose of acquiring equipment etc.

p.      Liaise with other schools to share resources.

q.      Supervise the work of the Laboratory Assistant.

r.       Assist in the coordination of the professional development of the Laboratory Assistant(s).

s.       Assist with Inventory of Supplies and ensure effective usage;

t.        Ensure necessary records/logbooks are updated on a daily basis;

u.      Deliver the support service in a professional and competent manner.

v.      In absence of other Lab staff, to take responsibility of all lab activities.

w.    Maintain arms-length conduct with all students.

x.      Perform any other lawful duties assigned.
