Utility Operator

The Multi-Skilled Equipment Operator safely and productively operates a range of mobile and ancillary equipment across construction and mining activities, including earthmoving, haulage, loading, road and site-works, lifting support, and general site support. The role works to approved procedures, plans, and instructions, completes equipment pre-use inspections and operator care, maintains accurate records, and promptly escalates abnormal conditions. Work must remain within approved procedures, training, and authorization.

• Secondary school education or equivalent.

• 5–7 years of experience.

• Relevant experience operating heavy equipment in construction, open-pit mining, civil works, or a related environment is preferred, with demonstrated operation of more than one equipment type.

• Valid driver’s licence and any heavy-equipment operator certification, competency assessments, or medical clearance required by site rules and applicable law; equipment-specific licences or certifications must be confirmed by the site before appointment.

• Current site induction, or willingness to complete site induction, equipment-specific familiarization, and competency assessment prior to authorization on each equipment type.

• Able to understand written procedures, drawings or work instructions, follow instructions, recognize abnormal conditions, and complete basic operating records.

• Operate assigned equipment in accordance with approved procedures, site traffic management rules, work instructions, permits, and supervisor direction. Equipment may include excavators, dozers, graders, wheel loaders, articulated and rigid haul trucks, water trucks, rollers and compactors, backhoes and skid-steer loaders, forklifts and telehandlers, and similar plant, as authorized.

• Perform construction tasks such as site clearing, bulk and detailed excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, compaction, road and platform construction and maintenance, drainage, and material placement to specified lines, levels, and tolerances.

• Perform mining-support tasks such as loading and hauling ore, waste, and construction materials; stockpile and dump management; haul road and ramp maintenance; dust suppression; and pit and dump-edge work in accordance with ground-control and berm requirements.

• Work to survey control, grade pegs, and supervisor instructions, and confirm work areas are clear of people, services, and hazards before operating.

• Operate effectively as part of a team, communicating by radio and agreed signals with spotters, supervisors, and other equipment operators, and following site-specific interaction and right-of-way rules.

• Keep equipment, cabs, tools, and work locations clean, orderly, and free of avoidable hazards.
