Excavator Operator

To be responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators and related heavy equipment to perform excavation, grading, trenching, loading, demolition, material handling, and other construction or earthmoving activities. The operator must follow project plans, safety procedures, environmental requirements, and instructions from supervisors while maintaining the equipment in good working condition.

● Relevant heavy equipment operation, construction, civil engineering, or vocational qualification.

● Valid excavator operator certification or license, where required by law or company policy.

● Demonstrated experience operating excavators and related heavy equipment.

● Knowledge of excavation, trenching, grading, loading, demolition, and material-handling procedures.

● Ability to read and interpret site plans, drawings, grade stakes, and work instructions.

● Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements, excavation hazards, and environmental controls.

● Ability to conduct equipment inspections and identify mechanical or safety defects.

● Strong hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and attention to detail.

● Ability to work safely in confined spaces, uneven terrain, adverse weather, and demanding site conditions.

● Good communication, teamwork, reliability, and time-management skills.

● Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.

● Physical ability to sit for extended periods, climb onto equipment, and perform routine manual tasks.

● Valid driver’s license and other required site certifications, where applicable.

● Ability to pass required medical, drug, alcohol, and background checks, where applicable.

● Operate excavators safely and efficiently on construction, civil engineering, mining, utility, and earthmoving projects.

● Perform excavation, trenching, grading, leveling, backfilling, loading, demolition, and material-handling activities.

● Read and interpret site plans, drawings, grade stakes, and work instructions.

● Conduct pre-start inspections and report defects, damage, leaks, or mechanical problems.

● Use excavator attachments, including buckets, breakers, augers, grapples, compactors, and other approved equipment.

● Position and operate the excavator safely around workers, vehicles, structures, utilities, and other equipment.

● Maintain awareness of underground services, overhead hazards, unstable ground, slopes, and changing site conditions.

● Follow all company, site, occupational health and safety, and environmental procedures.

● Use required personal protective equipment and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and site inductions.

● Maintain safe working distances and communicate effectively with banksmen, spotters, supervisors, and other workers.

● Complete work accurately according to project specifications, required grades, dimensions, and tolerances.

● Load trucks and move materials safely while preventing damage to equipment, property, and surrounding areas.

● Carry out routine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and minor adjustments as required.

● Refuel and secure the excavator in accordance with company and manufacturer procedures.

● Maintain accurate daily equipment logs, inspection records, production reports, and maintenance documentation.

● Assist with general site duties when required, including site preparation, cleanup, and material handling.

● Report incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, equipment damage, and operational concerns promptly.

● Protect the environment by preventing spills, controlling dust, and following waste-disposal requirements.

● Work cooperatively with supervisors, tradespeople, contractors, and other site personnel.

● Carry out any other duties necessary for the safe and efficient completion of assigned work.
