Description

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty machinery used in mining and construction operations. This role supports safe, reliable, and efficient equipment performance by minimizing downtime, performing preventive maintenance, and responding to field repair needs in demanding work environments.

Requirements

·       Diploma, technical certificate, or equivalent qualification in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment maintenance, automotive mechanics, or a related field.

·       Proven experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment in mining, construction, quarrying, civil works, road building, or industrial operations.

·       Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, powertrains, and mechanical components.

·       Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic diagrams, electrical schematics, service bulletins, and parts drawings.

·       Experience using diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, and measuring instruments.

·       Valid driver’s license; heavy vehicle, equipment operator, or commercial license is an advantage where applicable.

·       Welding, fabrication, air-conditioning, OEM, or manufacturer training is an asset.

·       Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.

·       Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and equipment reliability.

·       Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.

·       Good communication skills and the ability to explain equipment issues clearly.

·       Ability to prioritize repairs in a fast-paced operational environment.

·       Physical ability to work around large equipment, lift heavy components, stand for extended periods, and work in outdoor conditions.

·       Willingness to work shifts, weekends, overtime, call-outs, or remote-site assignments as operational needs require.

·       Experience with brands and equipment commonly used in mining and construction operations, such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Develon, Shantui or similar equipment.

·       Experience with planned maintenance systems, fleet maintenance software, and equipment inspection reports.

·       Ability to support both workshop-based repairs and field service breakdowns.

Responsibilities

·       Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, graders, haul trucks, compactors and support vehicles.

·       Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, brake inspections, undercarriage inspections, and component adjustments.

·       Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drivetrain components, transmissions, steering systems, braking systems, and cooling systems.

·       Use diagnostic tools, service software, manuals, schematics, and fault codes to identify equipment issues and determine the correct repair approach.

·       Conduct field repairs at mine sites, construction sites, workshops, and remote operating areas as required.

·       Remove, repair, rebuild, and replace major components such as engines, pumps, cylinders, final drives, transmissions, and hydraulic hoses.

·       Test repaired equipment to confirm safe and reliable operation before returning machinery to service.

·       Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts used, service intervals, and equipment condition.

·       Communicate with operators, supervisors, planners, and parts personnel to identify problems, plan repairs, and reduce operational downtime.

·       Follow all company health, safety, environmental, and site-specific procedures, including lockout/tagout, hot work, lifting, and confined-area requirements.

·       Maintain tools, equipment, service trucks, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.

·       Support emergency breakdown response, standby requirements, and after-hours repair needs when required.
