Description

Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) is the Company’s representative that "monitors and advises" on Marine Mammal and other environmental matters associated with the Project. He/She is responsible for verifying that the survey contractors and subcontractors comply with the provisions for care of Marine Mammals in the project specific ERA plan, the Project Safety, Security, Health & Environment (SSH&E) Plan, the contract requirements, applicable Marine Mammal laws and regulations, and appropriate industry standards in Country.

Requirements

  • an individual with a minimum of two years field experience as a marine mammal observer, marine biologist, or related field of study who has knowledge and training of Marine Mammal observation techniques and reporting requirements.

  • An individual with knowledge of industry Safety, Security, Health, and Environmental (SSH&E) standards and Company reporting requirements.

  • an individual with a college degree in Biology, Marine & Environmental Sciences, or equivalent.

  • an individual with valid Sea Survival, Personnel Protective Equipment, and First Aid/CPR training.

  • an individual with valid medical certification.

  • an individual who has demonstrated skills in effective communications, interface management, auditing and assessing operations, and problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and record Marine Mammal activity during the course of the survey.

  • Monitor and record the activity of other species of concern identified by the project environmental risk assessment.

  • Monitor and assess Contractor SSH&E procedures and processes in relation to Marine Mammals and other environmental matters.

  • Ensure all onboard procedures in relation to Marine Mammals conform to expectations set out in the Marine Mammal monitoring plan

  • Ensure adherence to the contract SSH&E requirements and Project SSH&E Plan in relation to Marine Mammals

  • Communicate deviations to EMDC and Lead ǪC onboard

  • Provide MMO training to vessel crew members as appropriate.

  • Compile a log of Marine Mammal sightings, activity, and detailed MMO report.

  • Assist the Lead ǪC Representative to compile MMO data for reporting purposes.

  • Work with Technical and SSH&E ǪCs as a team

  • Maintain awareness of other ǪCs' areas of responsibility

  • At the end of the survey, the Marine Mammal Observer is to submit three (3) hard copies and three CDROM digital copies (to include all photographs) of the MMO Report.
