Job Description: Medical Laboratory Technician

A Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for collecting, preparing, testing, and analyzing patient samples such as blood, urine, stool, swabs, and other body fluids to assist doctors and healthcare professionals in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring medical conditions.

The Medical Laboratory Technician must perform laboratory tests accurately, maintain proper records, operate and care for laboratory equipment, follow infection control and safety procedures, and ensure all results are handled confidentially and reported in a timely manner. The role requires attention to detail, good organizational skills, professionalism, and the ability to work closely with doctors, nurses, patients, and other medical staff.

Requirements

Qualifications for Medical Laboratory Technician

  1. Certificate, Diploma, Associate Degree, or equivalent qualification in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.

  2. Previous experience working in a medical laboratory, clinic, hospital, or diagnostic center would be an asset.

  3. Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, sample collection, and specimen handling.

  4. Ability to operate and maintain common laboratory equipment and machines.

  5. Knowledge of infection control, laboratory safety, and proper disposal of medical waste.

  6. Good understanding of confidentiality and patient privacy requirements.

  7. Ability to read, understand, and follow laboratory test requests and standard operating procedures.

  8. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling samples and recording results.

  9. Good communication skills and the ability to work with doctors, nurses, patients, and other staff.

  10. Basic computer skills for entering test results, maintaining records, and preparing reports.

  11. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  12. Must be responsible, reliable, organized, and professional.

  13. Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends, or shifts if required.

  14. Registration or licensing with the relevant medical/laboratory authority, where required by law.

  15. Training or certification in phlebotomy would be an advantage.

Responsibilities

Duties of a Medical Laboratory Technician

  1. Collect, receive, label, and prepare patient specimens for testing.

  2. Perform routine laboratory tests on blood, urine, stool, swabs, and other body samples.

  3. Operate, clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory machines and equipment.

  4. Record and report test results accurately and promptly.

  5. Ensure all samples are handled safely and stored correctly.

  6. Follow proper infection control, hygiene, and safety procedures at all times.

  7. Maintain confidentiality of patient information and test results.

  8. Prepare slides, cultures, reagents, and other laboratory materials as required.

  9. Assist doctors and medical staff by providing reliable laboratory results.

  10. Monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and report when items need to be ordered.

  11. Dispose of medical waste, sharps, and biological materials according to safety guidelines.

  12. Identify abnormal or urgent test results and report them immediately to the relevant medical personnel.

  13. Keep the laboratory clean, organized, and properly stocked.

  14. Follow standard operating procedures and quality control requirements.

  15. Participate in quality assurance checks and maintain accurate laboratory records.

  16. Assist with blood collection or phlebotomy where required.

  17. Verify patient details and test requests before processing samples.

  18. Report equipment faults, errors, or safety concerns to the supervisor.

  19. Maintain professionalism when dealing with patients and staff.

  20. Perform any other related duties assigned by the supervisor or management.
