Description

The Carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, repairing and maintaining wooden and related structures required for the Company’s camp rehabilitation, infrastructure development and preparation for open-pit mining.

The position will support the construction and maintenance of accommodation buildings, offices, workshops, storage facilities, walkways, platforms, formwork, roofing structures and other temporary or permanent facilities. The Carpenter must interpret drawings and measurements, select and use materials efficiently and complete work safely and to the required standard.

Requirements

  • Secondary education or an equivalent level of functional literacy and numeracy.

  • Technical or vocational certification in Carpentry, Joinery, Building Construction or a related trade is preferred.

  • Training in occupational safety, work at height, scaffold safety and first aid would be advantageous.

  • A minimum of five years’ practical carpentry or construction experience.

Responsibilities

  1. Construct, install, repair and maintain wooden structures, fixtures and fittings throughout the camp and operational areas.

  2. Measure, mark, cut, shape, assemble and join timber, plywood and other construction materials.

  3. Construct and repair walls, partitions, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs, railings, shelving and storage units.

  4. Build concrete formwork, shuttering, bracing and temporary supports in accordance with approved measurements and instructions.

  5. Assist with the construction and maintenance of camp buildings, workshops, warehouses, offices, kitchens, dining facilities, washrooms and accommodation units.

  6. Read and interpret basic drawings, sketches, specifications, measurements and work instructions.

  7. Inspect existing structures and recommend the repair or replacement of damaged or deteriorated components.

  8. Install prefabricated components and assist with modular building assembly where required.

  9. Select suitable materials and calculate the approximate quantities of timber, fasteners, and other supplies required for the assigned work.

  10. Minimize wastage by planning cuts and using materials responsibly.

  11. Ensure structures are level, aligned, securely fastened and completed to the required quality and safety standard.

  12. Safely use hand and power tools, including saws, drills, planers, sanders, nail guns, levels and measuring equipment.

  13. Inspect tools before use and report damaged, defective or missing tools immediately.

  14. Perform basic cleaning and preventive care of assigned tools and equipment.

  15. Erect and use ladders, scaffolding and work platforms only when properly authorized and protected by the required fall-prevention measures.

  16. Follow approved procedures for work at height, electrical tool use, lifting, material handling, and other hazardous activities.

  17. Maintain a clean and orderly work area and remove nails, offcuts, debris and other hazards promptly.

  18. Wear the prescribed personal protective equipment and participate in toolbox meetings, safety briefings and emergency drills.

  19. Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, structural defects and material shortages to the supervisor.

  20. Assist with emergency repairs and other reasonable construction or maintenance duties consistent with the position.
