The OHSE Officer provides expertise in Health, Safety & Environment by ensuring that the Corporate Health, Safety & Environment program and practices are following government laws and regulations. The position works with senior management and site teams to continuously upgrade their safety programs to improve the company’s safety performance.
As the OHSE Officer, you will be responsible for coordinating the implementation and management of One Communications Safety Management System. Other responsibilities will include:
· Developing & implementing safety programs.
· Ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and industry best practice for safety for the company and the environment.
· Recommend initiatives for the continuous improvement of work safety performance.
· Providing subject matter expertise for operational and capital decisions to maintain compliance.
· Monitoring and evaluating safe work practices, contractor safety; management and behavioral based safety.
· Ensuring the operational practices of the company impact on the environment in a minimal way adhering to local legislative practices.
· To be successful in this role you will need to have:
· Previous experience in a safety focused role.
· Demonstrated experience in leading teams and providing management advice on safety matters.
· Previous working knowledge of legislative based instruments of risk management, OHS and Workers Compensation; ability to communicate with external regulators and government agencies.
· Strong communication skills with diverse groups and opinions a must.
· An understanding of telecoms safety, maintenance and operational processes, security systems, and occupational health and hygiene strategies.
· Also is required to ensure compliance with all GT&T policies and procedures, as well as all applicable regulations.

· Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety or related/equivalent field required; or 3+ years of related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Champion our culture change and behavior-based safety efforts by leading One Communications Health & Safety Program. Which requires annually assessing all elements of the safety program and safety performance and providing recommendations for safety performance targets and safety program improvement, by developing, administering and directing the full spectrum of health and safety policies, practices and procedures to enhance the overall health and safety of contributors and to comply with all legislative and other applicable regulations and standards.
· Provide advice and direction on specific topics that may impact on the organization and company officers in regard to due diligence related to Health & Safety requirements. This includes ensuring that GTT complies with laws and
· regulations and advising company on required action to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
· Prepare safety, health and environment strategies and developing/deploying internal policy, yearly action plan, KPIs and budget.
· Ensure all necessary safety items are included in the scope of any operational changes and projects through involvement in capex process and auditing safety checks for new projects.
· Work with sites/departments to improve their safety programs through assessment of existing programs, identifying areas of concern and providing solutions; and defining and developing site H&S Coordinators’ role.
· Conduct and coordinate scheduled network wide facilities /locations, Warehouse and Office Health & Safety Audits for designated sites, monitor the corrective action plans developed by locations based on safety audits, and ensure all corrective actions are completed.
· Evaluate health hazards and investigate contributor’s health and safety concerns. Make recommendations to eliminate or reduce job related risk factors
· Prepare specific safety training to be delivered across all sites/Departments. Review and update the safety training requirements. Assist sites/departments in development of safety training resources and sharing of safety training material.
· · Coordinate and manage fire prevention. Provide for the regular inspections of the fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, fire suppression system and fire alarm systems. Comply with Fire Safety Act & best practices.
· Develop and implement health and safety programs. Comply with the Accident and Illness Protection Program requirements. Write compliance programs, train employees, provide medical surveillance and obtain appropriate equipment to implement programs.
· Ensure that waste disposal systems are in accordance with established regulations.
· Serve as an emergency contact for the emergency management program. Assist in the development of emergency planning exercises which include the management of contracts for emergency services. Work with external agencies to coordinate emergency response efforts.
· Coordinate and manage environmental compliance (storage tanks, EPA permits, etc.)
· Communicate safety news and safety performance through monthly newsletter, accident flash notices.
· Prepare working papers, reports and presentations of findings and recommendations.
· Develop a safety case management system and analyze the company practices/trends/costs. Coach Managers and Supervisors on the costs of compensation cases and their impact on short- and long-term workers comp. Support/challenge site/department management on issues arising in the work comp. cases.
· Coordinate the formation of Safety committees, organize monthly meetings with all departmental heads, and prepare reports for internal and external bodies.
