Description

The Assistant Driller works closely under the supervision of the Driller to ensure the safety and efficiency of the drilling process. Managing the machinery and equipment necessary for drilling, also responsible for guiding the drilling team, assisting in the training of new team members.

Requirements

  • Education and Training – High school education or equivalent is preferred but not required; one year of previous Assistant Driller experience and/or training; a combination of experience and education is acceptable or deemed sufficient by management. Must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. Understand I.A.D.C. and M.D.S. regulations. Ability to obtain a well control (supervisor level)/IADC certificate, and BOP certified.

  • Technical Requirements – Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Basic Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, climb and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Must be able to keep balance and coordination while working off the ground. This job occasionally requires working 130’ off the ground.

  • Working Conditions - This job is in an outside setting and the noise level is loud. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and outside weather conditions and noise is moderate. The employee will occasionally be exposed to extreme heat or cold, fumes, gases, and frequently work on slick surfaces due to weather, drilling mud or oil/grease. This position is required to travel to on site locations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs rig up, down, and operating activities for 12-16 hours per day, for 7-20 consecutive days.

  • Operates and repairs drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Assists Driller and Rig Manager to oversee and ensure assigned crews are properly trained in accordance with company requirements. This includes conducting training for all primary and secondary drilling operations.

  • Understands and demonstrates the safe handling, proper application, and proper disposal of drilling fluids.

  • Establishes a relationship with crew and acts as a liaison between the crew and the Rig Manager.

  • Ensures all well control equipment is properly maintained, repairs are completed in a timely manner, and all personnel are properly trained to operate the equipment.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive safety cultural climate in all work practices, enabling personnel to slow down or stop tasks that are deemed to have excessive risk.

  • Assists the Driller with periodic inspections of the rig and rig location, identifying issues regarding safe and efficient operations of the rig, and makes timely recommendations to rectify any noted problems.

  • Learns the appropriate documentation (i.e. reports, logs, etc.) in accordance with company policy.
